Travel Tips

By Plane:  The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport (Thiruvananthapuram).  From the airport you can reach Varkala by car, train or bus. (1hr)

There is also Cochin Airport, that is served by Air Asia, which is a budget airline. From Cochin to Varkala, you can take a train (4h)

By Train:  Varkala is also connected by Rail Network.  If coming from Trivandrum or Cochin, the better option will be coming by train.  Most trains stop at Varkala. 

By Bus:  State Transport Buses are available from Trivandrum. Bus service available from Varkala to many parts of South Kerala and Kanyakumari.

Places to Visit

  • Nature Care Centre. Papanasam beach;

  • Varkala Tunnel. Built by the British in 1880;

  • Fishing Hamlets of Anjengo and its British Fort

  • Coir Processing Centers. In the Backwaters of Akathumuri, Kadakkavur;

  • Edava Beach. Beautiful and serene beaches where you can bask in the sun and salubrious climate.

  • Shree Janardhana Swamy Temple 2000 years old. Varkala has been a Hindu pilgrimage site since the 12th Century. 

  • The Varkala sands, have become an ideal spot for confluence of cultures. 

  • The temple, dedicated to Vishnu and Hanuman, on the top of the hill has brought abundance of visitors 

  • Sivagiri, Sree Narayana Guru, saint, social reformer, philosopher and leader of Ezhava community, 

  • Sree Narayana Guru (1855-1928), was Gandhi’s friend, and lived in the same time of other Saints known in India
